Someone I barely know online sent me a surprise gift β is this a red flag?
I've been talking to someone in this community for about three weeks. Nothing intense β just casual replies on threads, a few DMs about comfort items and sensory stuff. They seemed nice. Yesterday they sent me a digital Steam gift card out of nowhere. No occasion. Just "I was thinking of you and wanted to do something nice."
Part of me was touched. A bigger part of me felt... obligated? Like now I owe them something. More personal conversation, maybe. More vulnerability. I haven't accepted the gift yet. I keep thinking about something I read on this forum about gift-giving being a trust-building tactic in buddy-trolling.
Am I overthinking this? Can a gift just be a gift? How do you tell the difference between genuine generosity and a trust exploit?

Trust your discomfort. The obligation you're feeling is the point β whether the gift-giver is conscious of it or not. In the buddy-troll playbook, unsolicited gifts are a Stage 3 tactic: they create a sense of indebtedness that makes the target more compliant during extraction. The timing (three weeks in) and the lack of occasion are yellow flags. A green-flag gift: small, tied to something specific you mentioned ("I remembered you said you lost your favorite stim toy, so I sent you a link to a replacement"), and accompanied by zero expectation. A red-flag gift: expensive, unsolicited, early in the relationship, and followed by increased demands for personal information. You haven't accepted the gift β that's your answer. Decline politely. If they're genuinely kind, they'll understand. If they're upset or guilt-trippy, that's your confirmation. π¦
i once had someone send me a jellycat (the actual stuffed animal, not digital) after like two weeks of talking. i felt SO weird about it. kept it in the box for a month because touching it felt like accepting a contract. eventually gave it away. listen to your gut. if a gift feels like a debt, it's not a gift.
something i noticed: when i'm deep in a project β like, REALLY deep, lost in it β the big scary feelings get quieter. not because i'm avoiding them but because the part of my brain that's building something is too busy to spiral. it's not a solution but it's a break. and sometimes a break is enough to come back with clearer eyes.
the ice cube trick. when everything is too much and i can't think and my brain is screaming β ice cube in each hand. just hold them. the cold is so specific and so localized that it pulls my brain out of the spiral and into my palms. it doesn't fix anything. but it stops the spiral long enough for me to breathe. that's all it needs to do.
