My Most Gloriously Unnecessary Impulse Purchase: A Confessional

We've all been there. The store. The shelf. The item that whispered "you need me" even though you absolutely, categorically did NOT. What's your most gloriously unnecessary impulse purchase? Mine: A tiny waffle maker that makes exactly one (1) waffle in the shape of a heart. I bought it at 11pm from a 24-hour department store. I have used it three times. Each time the waffle was too small to be a meal and too cute to be practical. No regrets.

a miniature cowboy hat for my cat. she wore it for approximately four seconds before she threw herself on the floor and rolled around until it came off. i have a photo. the photo was worth the fourteen dollars.

a banana slicer. it's a piece of curved plastic that slices a banana into uniform rounds. i could do this with a knife in four seconds. i bought a dedicated banana tool. it's in my drawer. i've never used it. but i COULD. any day now.

There's something about working with your hands that reconnects you to being human in a way screens never can. I strip rust off old cast iron pans. My friend builds model trains. Another friend bakes sourdough. Different tools, same impulse β€” making something tangible in a world that increasingly wants everything to be digital and disposable.

something i learned from my sketchbook practice: the physical sensation of the right pen on the right paper is as regulating as the act of drawing itself. i wonder if that applies to other things too β€” like, maybe the joy isn't just in the hobby, maybe it's also in the texture and weight and sound of the materials.
