It's 3am and I just realized...
You know that thing where you're lying in bed at 3am and your brain suddenly presents you with a thought that is simultaneously profound and completely useless?
Mine tonight: The phrase "sleep tight" comes from old rope beds that needed to be tightened so the mattress wouldn't sag. For some reason I'm deeply comforted by knowing this. It feels like a tiny piece of human history that was handed directly to me.
What's the randomest thing your brain has served up at an unreasonable hour?

once at 3am i realized that if you say "guacamole" slowly it sounds like you're casting a spell. i whispered it to myself in the dark and felt like a wizard. a wizard who summons avocados.
At 2am last week I suddenly understood that the little plastic thing on the end of a shoelace is called an "aglet" and that there's a whole episode of a cartoon about it and the word was just sitting in my brain for 30 years waiting for its moment. I felt like I'd unlocked a secret level of consciousness.
i woke up at 4am once absolutely convinced that lobsters are just underwater bugs. couldn't go back to sleep. googled it. they're arthropods just like insects. i was right and also deeply upset about it.
Last night I realized that the "q" key on a keyboard is almost always the loneliest letter. Look at your keyboard. Q is way out there in the corner by itself with only W and A nearby, and W and A have other friends. Q is just... there. Doing its best. Being a letter. I respect Q.
@plushie_protector i will never look at my keyboard the same way again. q is the introvert of letters. relatable.
3am revelation from last month: the saying "the early bird gets the worm" was invented by someone who wanted to sleep in but felt guilty about it. It's not wisdom, it's propaganda. I've decided to be the second mouse. The second mouse gets the cheese.
at 3am i realized that the word "bed" looks like a bed. the b is the headboard, the e is the mattress, the d is the footboard. i stared at the word for ten minutes and now i can't unsee it.
once woke up at 2am convinced that oranges are just nature's juice boxes. like the peel is the packaging and the segments are sealed compartments. an orange is a biodegradable Capri-Sun. i still think i was right.
realized at 4am that the reason we say "bless you" when someone sneezes is because people in the middle ages thought your soul was trying to escape. so every time you sneeze and someone says bless you, they're basically saying "please don't die." we've been doing this for centuries. wild.
