The "grelief" of digital withdrawal β I'm simultaneously relieved to be hidden and devastated to be alone
I deleted my accounts two weeks ago after a harassment wave. And I feel two completely opposite things at the same time.
Relief: I'm hidden. Nobody can find me. Nobody is screenshotting my posts. I don't have to perform. I don't have to scan for threats. The silence is genuinely peaceful.
Grief: I lost my community. My online friends. The spaces where I felt understood. I'm alone now, really alone, in a way I haven't been since I found these communities years ago.
I've seen the term "grelief" used here β grief + relief. That's exactly it. They exist simultaneously and it's so confusing. How do you hold both? How do you grieve something you chose to lose for your own safety?

Grelief. That's the word. The grief + relief of escaping a threat environment while mourning everything you left behind. I lived in this state for months after I deleted my accounts. What helped: I stopped trying to resolve the contradiction. I stopped trying to decide whether I was "happy" or "sad" about the deletion. Both were true at the same time, and that's okay. You can be relieved to be safe AND devastated to be alone. Those feelings don't cancel each other out. They just sit next to each other. Also: being hidden doesn't mean being alone forever. You can find new community. Smaller, safer, slower spaces. This forum, for one. The silence right now is a recovery period, not a life sentence. You're not alone. You're between communities. There's a difference.
"Grelief" is the perfect word for that impossible simultaneity. I experienced exactly this when I nuked my main account last year β the confusion of feeling both safe and devastated was disorienting in a way I didn't have language for until now. Something that helped was creating a small, private Signal group with just three trusted friends from the old community. It wasn't the same as the public space, but it gave me connection without the exposure that made me delete. The grief of choosing something for your own safety doesn't make it any less heavy. Both can be true at once.
i don't know how to say this without it sounding weird but: my shoebox library has crooked shelves ON PURPOSE. i could make them straight. i have a ruler. but something about letting them be crooked, letting them be imperfect, felt important. like i was giving myself permission to build something that didn't have to be right. maybe that applies to feelings too. maybe some things don't need to be fixed β they just need to be acknowledged and allowed to be what they are.
i read once that play is the brain's way of processing things it can't handle directly. animals do it β dogs play-fight to practice boundaries without real danger. kids play house to process family dynamics. adults... we forgot how to play. but i think my miniatures and dioramas are play. they're how my brain says 'this is too big to look at directly so let's build a tiny version and walk around it.'
