Finished my GBA build — before and after (a text description since, you know, text-only)
The GameBoy Advance mod is done and I need to tell someone who'll appreciate it.
What I started with: a beat-up glacier GBA from eBay. Scratched screen, dead speaker, battery cover missing. Paid $30 including shipping.
What I built:
- New shell: translucent purple (the atomic purple GameBoy Color was my childhood and I'm chasing that aesthetic forever)
- IPS backlit screen: brightness adjustable with a hidden touch sensor. The difference is staggering — it's like playing with night vision goggles versus in a cave
- Rechargeable USB-C battery: no more AAs. This alone was worth the soldering
- New speaker and audio amp: sounds cleaner than the original hardware
- Glass lens instead of plastic: no more scratches ever
Total cost: about $90 in parts. Total time: maybe 8 hours spread over a few weeks. Skill level needed: intermediate soldering and patience with tiny ribbon cables.
The best part: I'm replaying Golden Sun on original hardware but with a screen that doesn't require perfect lighting. It's the game I remember, but better.
If anyone's curious about getting into GameBoy modding, I can write up a starter guide for the parts list and tools. The barrier to entry is lower than you'd think — my first build was a GameBoy Color with just a new shell and an IPS screen, zero soldering required.

i have a theory that fidget toys and hobby tools are cousins. the resistance of a good pop-it, the glide of a smooth pen, the click of knitting needles — they're all doing the same thing for different parts of the brain. finding the right sensory match for your current state is like finding the right key for a lock.
GOLDEN SUN. You just unlocked a core memory. The djinn system, the class changes, the puzzles — that game was so far ahead of its time. Also the translucent purple shell is objectively the correct choice. My GBC was the same color and I've been chasing that high ever since.
I don't know anything about GameBoys but I deeply respect the tinker energy. Taking something broken and making it better than new — that's universal. Also $30 eBay find to a custom build is extremely satisfying. This is the kind of restoration project I love to see.
There's something about working with your hands that reconnects you to being human in a way screens never can. I strip rust off old cast iron pans. My friend builds model trains. Another friend bakes sourdough. Different tools, same impulse — making something tangible in a world that increasingly wants everything to be digital and disposable.
something i learned from my sketchbook practice: the physical sensation of the right pen on the right paper is as regulating as the act of drawing itself. i wonder if that applies to other things too — like, maybe the joy isn't just in the hobby, maybe it's also in the texture and weight and sound of the materials.
