Movies I Know Are Terrible and Have Watched at Least Four Times

Not a guilty pleasure. Not a so-bad-it's-good classic. I mean a movie you KNOW is terrible, and yet... you keep watching it. It's in your rotation. You can't explain why. Mine: The 2003 live-action Cat in the Hat. It's objectively nightmarish. The costumes. The jokes. The ABSOLUTE CHAOS. And yet I've seen it like twelve times. Mike Myers is doing an accent that doesn't exist. The set design looks like a fever dream. It's a train wreck and I'm in the front car watching it happen. I can't look away.

the thing about building tiny worlds is that you're the god of them. everything is exactly where you put it. nothing happens without your permission. and i think that's why i do it β€” because the real world is so OUT of my control and the tiny one isn't. maybe that's not escapism. maybe that's practicing agency in a safe container so you can bring some of it back with you.

sharknado. all of them. there are six. i've seen all six. i don't know why i keep doing this to myself. the effects get worse every movie. the plot makes less sense every movie. at this point i'm not watching for entertainment. i'm watching for closure that will never come.

something about weighted blankets: they're not just for sleep. i drape one over my shoulders while i'm sitting at my desk and it's like my nervous system says 'oh, we're being held, okay, we can stop bracing now.' the weight tells my body something my brain can't hear. physical pressure β†’ nervous system response. it's that direct.

The Twilight saga. All of them. I know the dialogue is wooden. I know the vampire lore is questionable. I know Jacob imprinted on a BABY. But every fall I rewatch them and every fall I cry at the wedding scene. It's a condition. I'm not seeking treatment.

the emoji movie. i watched it on a plane once. then i watched it again on the return flight. i don't know why. it's not good. it's actively bad. but something about the little hand emoji going on a journey to find his purpose... i was rooting for him. against my will. against all logic.
