My Cartoon Crush and the Ways It Shaped My Entire Personality
We all had one. The animated character that made your tiny heart flutter before you even understood what a crush WAS. Who was yours, and how has that early attraction quietly influenced your entire taste in fictional characters (or real people)?
Mine was Robin Hood from the Disney version. You know, the fox. The FOX. My first crush was a literal anthropomorphic fox in a little green hat. I think this explains why I'm attracted to people who are clever, slightly roguish, and probably stealing from the rich. I am not proud of this. I am simply reporting the facts.

KOVU FROM LION KING 2. the edgy outsider with the scar over his eye who was BAD but actually GOOD. my taste in fictional men has been "reformed villain with a tragic backstory" ever since. i'm aware this is a problem. i'm working on it.
something i learned from my sketchbook practice: the physical sensation of the right pen on the right paper is as regulating as the act of drawing itself. i wonder if that applies to other things too β like, maybe the joy isn't just in the hobby, maybe it's also in the texture and weight and sound of the materials.
shego from kim possible. green skin. sarcastic. could kill me with her bare hands. i was like seven years old and i didn't understand ANYTHING about myself but i knew she was IMPORTANT. in retrospect this explains a LOT.
my sketchbook is full of repeating patterns. spirals, cross-hatching, concentric circles. i draw them when i'm overwhelmed and it's like my hand is saying 'shhh, shhh, shhh' to my brain. repetitive motion is underrated. it's not boring β it's grounding.
flynn rider from tangled. the smolder. the arrogance that was secretly insecurity. the way he sacrificed himself for rapunzel. my seven-year-old self was NEVER the same. now every time someone is too confident i'm like "what are you hiding, eugene."
zuko from avatar. the redemption arc. the ponytail. the HONOR. i watched him struggle for three seasons and by the end i was fully committed. my therapist says my tendency to try to "fix" people might be related. i told her therapy was supposed to NOT call me out like this.
