A Letter From My Inner Child: The Version I'd Actually Send

Close your eyes. Your childhood self just handed you a note written in crayon on construction paper. What does it say? Mine: "Dear future me, I hope you still like dinosaurs. I hope you still color sometimes. I hope you're not too busy to notice when the clouds look like animals. I hope you're happy. But if you're not, that's okay too. I still think you're really cool. Love, 7-year-old you. P.S. Please don't forget about Barnaby."

I'm 47 and I bought my first LEGO set in 35 years this month. It's a bookstore β€” two stories, a little townhouse attached, a tree that changes color for the seasons. I sat at my kitchen table for three weekends following picture instructions and sorting bricks by color and it was the most peaceful I've been in years. All of which is to say: joy doesn't have an age limit. Whatever little thing you're doing that brings you light β€” keep doing it. The world will tell you it's childish. The world is wrong.

i have a theory that fidget toys and hobby tools are cousins. the resistance of a good pop-it, the glide of a smooth pen, the click of knitting needles β€” they're all doing the same thing for different parts of the brain. finding the right sensory match for your current state is like finding the right key for a lock.

"dear grown-up me, do you still have the dragon? the one with the floppy ear? i hope you still have him. i hope you didn't give him away because someone said you were too old. you're never too old for dragons. love, little jamie. p.s. eat more cereal."

"dear future self, i hope you have a cat. i hope your apartment is full of soft things. i hope nobody yells at you anymore. i hope you learned how to say no without feeling guilty. i'm working on it. are you? love, the version of you who still believed in magic. p.s. you were right about the green socks."
