I just moved into a new rental and the lease basically says "don't even breathe on the walls." No nails, no screws, no adhesive anything that might leave a mark. I get it — they want their deposit back too — but I also want this place to feel like MY space and not a hotel room I'm just passing through. So far I've figured out: - Command hooks for everything (they've held up my heaviest framed print for 3 months now) - Tension rods for hanging plants and lightweight curtains — no drilling, fully removable - Washi tape for "framing" postcards and photos on the wall — it peels off clean and comes in patterns that actually look intentional What else have you all figured out? Especially curious about: - What actually holds up over time (some of those "renter friendly" claims are... optimistic) - Floor solutions — rugs over ugly carpet, interlocking foam tiles, anything that's saved a sad floor - Kitchen and bathroom storage that doesn't involve drilling into cabinets I'm genuinely excited to learn your tricks. Every deposit I save is one step closer to a down payment someday.

Command strips are great but here's a tip: the velcro-style ones (the picture hanging strips) are WAY better than the standard hooks for anything framed. They distribute weight better and come off cleaner. Also — and I learned this the hard way — you have to pull the tab STRAIGHT DOWN along the wall, not out toward you. Pulling out will rip the paint. Pulling down releases the adhesive cleanly.

I collect fountain pens and I've learned that the right tool changes everything. Not because it's expensive — my favorite pen cost $30 — but because it feels right in my hand. The weight, the balance, the way the ink flows. There's a lesson in that somewhere about finding the things that fit YOU instead of trying to fit yourself into things that weren't made for you.

tension rods my beloved <3 i have them in every doorway and window. for a renter-friendly kitchen hack: tension rod inside a cabinet with s-hooks for hanging measuring cups and spatulas. frees up drawer space and no one ever thinks to look up lol.

sometimes i think the whole point of hobbies is sensory regulation dressed up as productivity. we're allowed to just enjoy the feeling of yarn, the smell of paint, the sound of a pen scratching paper. that IS the hobby. the thing you make at the end is almost secondary.

For floors: I put down those interlocking foam exercise mats (the colorful puzzle-piece ones) under my rug. It adds cushioning, insulates against cold, and when I move out I just pull them up. They're like $20 for a pack. Ugly on their own but covered by a rug you'd never know.

OKAY so for kitchen storage without drilling: over-the-cabinet-door hooks are my secret weapon. I have them on every cabinet. They hold dish towels, pot holders, a small basket for spice packets, even a hanging fruit basket. Zero damage, maximum storage. Also: magnetic strips on the side of the fridge for knives and small metal spice tins.

Honestly the best renter-friendly trick I learned was just... asking. I asked my landlord if I could paint one accent wall and offered to paint it back before moving out. He said yes. Some landlords are more flexible than the lease suggests, especially if you have a good relationship and offer to undo changes. Worst they can say is no.

Washi tape gang checking in. I have an entire gallery wall of postcards held up with washi tape and it's been up for 8 months. No peeling, no damage, and when I want to switch things around it takes 30 seconds. Pro tip: the wider tapes hold better than the skinny ones. I use the 15mm width for anything heavier than a photo.

My cast iron skillet is over a hundred years old. I found it rusted and forgotten at a flea market, brought it home, stripped it, seasoned it, and now it's the best pan I own. I think about that a lot when I see people discover hobbies later in life. The thing was always good. It just needed someone who knew how to restore it. Same with joy — it was always there, waiting to be uncovered.

For the bathroom: a shower caddy that hangs over the shower head pipe. No drilling, holds all your stuff, and the tension is adjustable. Also works for kitchen sinks if you need extra counter space. I have one in my bathroom and I genuinely forget it wasn't there when I moved in.
