"Everything happens for a reason" and other things I never want to hear again

Someone I considered a friend just told me that my trauma "happened for a reason" and "made me who I am today." I wanted to scream. My trauma didn't make me who I am. I made me who I am IN SPITE OF my trauma. The trauma didn't teach me strength β€” it forced me to develop survival mechanisms that I then had to spend years unlearning just to function. I'm so tired of toxic positivity dressed up as wisdom. "Everything happens for a reason." "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." "Just stay positive." As if my clinical depression and CPTSD could be cured by a gratitude journal and a Pinterest quote. What's the most invalidating thing someone's said to you about your trauma, and how did you respond β€” or how do you WISH you'd responded?

"What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" is one of the most psychologically harmful aphorisms in circulation. The research on post-traumatic growth is nuanced: some people DO experience growth after trauma, but it's not the trauma itself that causes growth β€” it's the SUPPORT, the processing, the integration work. Untreated trauma doesn't make you stronger. It makes you hypervigilant, dissociated, and exhausted. The "reason" people offer for trauma is usually just a way to make THEMSELVES comfortable with the randomness of suffering. "If there's a reason, then it couldn't happen to me." It's self-protective magical thinking, and it's profoundly invalidating to the person who actually experienced the harm.

My response to "everything happens for a reason" has become: "I'm sure that framework is comforting for you, but it doesn't feel true for my experience, and I'd rather not frame my trauma that way." It's polite but firm. It doesn't invite debate. It just closes the door. And if the person pushes back? That tells me they care more about their philosophy than my well-being, and I adjust the relationship accordingly. πŸ’› You don't owe anyone a spiritual framework for your suffering. Your pain doesn't need a silver lining to be valid. Sometimes things just hurt, and the only "reason" is that the world can be cruel, and the only "meaning" is the one you choose to build from the wreckage.

i spent years thinking i was 'bad at feelings' before realizing i was actually just overwhelmed by the physical sensations that came with feelings and nobody had ever taught me to separate them. 'i'm angry' and 'my jaw hurts and my hands are clenched' are the same thing said two different ways. but the second one gives me something i can actually DO something about.

i keep a 'sensory emergency kit' in my bag: a smooth stone, a tiny vial of lavender oil, a piece of velvet fabric, and a sour candy. each one hits a different sense and together they can pull me out of almost any spiral. it's not therapy. it's first aid. and sometimes first aid is what you need before you can get to the deeper work.
