The Most Unhinged Compliment I've Ever Received: A Collection
Not a normal compliment. Not "you're pretty" or "you're smart." The compliment that made you stop and go "...what?" The one you still think about at 3am. The one that was probably meant kindly but came out absolutely DERANGED.
Mine: A stranger at a bus stop once told me I have "the energy of a very organized squirrel." I think about this weekly. What does that MEAN. Am I frantic but prepared? Do I seem like I'm hiding nuts? I have so many questions and zero answers.

I write letters to my niece every Sunday. With a fountain pen, on good paper. It takes me about an hour. She's nine and she writes back in crayon. Neither of us is doing it 'right' and that's exactly the point. The joy of making things β whether it's a letter or a LEGO set or a drawing β isn't in the quality of the output. It's in the act of showing up.
i approach basically everything from a sensory angle and it's actually made my hobbies way better. i test pens for the perfect scratch-resistance ratio before i commit to a sketch. i have opinions about paper weight. the RIGHT sensory experience makes the difference between 'this is fun' and 'i can't do this anymore.' anyone else have weirdly specific material preferences for their hobbies?
someone once told me i "look like i'd be good at parallel parking." i don't drive. i have never driven. what about my face communicates parallel parking proficiency? i need to know.
A coworker once said "you have the vibe of a haunted Victorian doll but in a fun way." IN A FUN WAY. I wasn't sure whether to thank her or schedule an exorcism. I said "thanks" and we never spoke of it again.
a barista wrote "you seem like you have a favorite spoon" on my coffee cup. i DO have a favorite spoon. i've never told anyone about the spoon. how did she KNOW. i think about that barista all the time.
someone in a group project once told me i have "strong coal miner energy." i'm a graphic designer. i work from home. i'm afraid of the dark. what about my powerpoint presentation said "this person has been underground." i'll never recover.
