What's your "I know this is weird but it works" coping strategy?

mine is: when i'm really dysregulated, i get in my car (not to drive anywhere, just in the garage), put the seat back, blast one specific song on repeat, and just... sit there. the enclosed space, the controlled sound, the privacy. it's like a sensory deprivation tank but with bass.
tell me yours. the weirder the better. i want to know the things you do that you'd never admit in a neurotypical space.

i lay on the floor. not on a rug or carpet. the hard floor. kitchen floor, bathroom floor, hallway floor. the cold and the hardness resets something in my nervous system. i've done this at parties. people think it's weird. i don't care.

I put my face in a bowl of ice water. Just... dunk. For a few seconds. It activates the mammalian dive reflex and literally forces your nervous system to calm down. It's extreme but it WORKS. I learned it in DBT and it's the only DBT skill I still use.

i narrate what i'm doing out loud in a silly accent. "now i am picking up THE SOCK. the sock goes IN THE HAMPER. good job jamie" β it makes me laugh and it externalizes the executive function and honestly it works better than any productivity method i've tried.

I read aloud to myself when I can't focus. Not just mouthing the words β full voice, different character voices, dramatic pauses. It started in college when I couldn't get through reading assignments and now it's my go-to for anything that requires sustained attention. My cat is my audience. She doesn't seem to mind.

i talk to my houseplants. they all have names. they all have personalities. i tell them about my day. they're the best listeners because they literally cannot interrupt me.

I press my face against cold windows. Car windows, house windows, doesn't matter. The cold and the pressure and looking outside... it resets me. I did it as a kid and my mom told me to "stop acting weird." Now I do it whenever I want and it's glorious.

I count ceiling tiles. Or floor tiles. Or bricks in a wall. The counting occupies the anxious part of my brain while the rest of me processes whatever I'm feeling. It's a stim I've done since childhood and only recently realized it WAS a stim.

i meow. when i'm overwhelmed and can't form words, i just... meow. it communicates "i'm not okay" without having to find actual language. my partner has learned to interpret the different meows. this is the weirdest thing about me and i'm only admitting it because this thread feels safe.

i smell my own wrist. i put a specific perfume on my wrist every morning and when i'm anxious i just... sniff my own arm like a weird little creature. the familiar scent grounds me. i've definitely done this in public without realizing.

I make Barnaby (my dragon) "talk" to me. I use a different voice for him. He asks me how I'm doing and I answer. It's basically self-therapy through a stuffed animal intermediary but it WORKS. Barnaby has talked me through more panic attacks than any human.

I brush my stuffed animals' fur. Not aggressively β gently, with a soft brush. The repetitive motion and the texture and the focus on caring for something β it's grounding in a way I can't explain.

I talk to my plants too, like @the_raccoon_king. But I also apologize to them. When I prune them, I say "I'm sorry, this is for your own good." My neighbor overheard me once and now she knocks before entering the garden. π

I go to the pet store. Not to buy anything β just to look at the fish tanks. The fish store near me has a wall of aquariums and I'll stand there for 20 minutes watching the fish swim. The movement, the bubbles, the quiet β it's deeply regulating. The employees probably think I'm casing the joint but I don't care.

@crayon_cryptid Vocalizing instead of verbalizing is SO real. I make little "beep" sounds. The meow is valid and I'm glad your partner understands it. π

i organize things. not my OWN things β that's impossible. but i'll go organize my friend's pantry or my mom's bookshelf. external chaos i can handle. internal chaos i cannot.

this thread is the best thing i've ever created. every single one of these is beautiful and creative and proof that we find ways to survive. meowing, fish tanks, face-on-cold-windows, barnaby-the-therapist-dragon. we're all just doing our best and honestly? we're doing great. π
