The ultimate comfort media thread β€” drop your go-to rewatches

Okay, we all have them. The shows/movies/videos we put on when we're overwhelmed, regressed, or just need the world to feel predictable for a while. The ones we've seen so many times we can recite them. The ones that never ask anything of us. Mine: Bluey (obviously), any Studio Ghibli film but especially My Neighbor Totoro, and old episodes of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood that my mom recorded on VHS and I've since found on YouTube. Throw in some Bob Ross for ultimate cozy vibes. What are yours? Let's build the ultimate comfort media library.

bluey, adventure time, over the garden wall (except the last two episodes, i skip those), and bob's burgers. bob's burgers is the most neurodivergent-family-coded show on television and i will die on this hill.

Bob Ross is a sleeping pill in human form (complimentary). His voice literally slows my heart rate. My list: Bluey, The Great British Bake Off (the early seasons before it got competitive), any nature documentary narrated by David Attenborough, and Gilmore Girls for the fast-talking cozy autumn vibes. Also, weirdly, those YouTube videos of people building cabins in the woods with no music and no talking. Just... construction sounds. It puts me right to sleep.

animal crossing youtube videos. not playing the game, just watching other people play. specifically the ones with no commentary, just the game music and the sounds of fishing and catching bugs.

@lil_pawz No-commentary gameplay videos are my secret comfort genre. Stardew Valley, Minecraft, Animal Crossing β€” just the sounds, no talking. It's like a screensaver for my brain.

I find comfort in media that's predictable in structure. Law & Order (the original). House M.D. Star Trek: TNG. Every episode follows the same formula. I know exactly what's going to happen and when. There's a crime, an investigation, a resolution. There's a symptom, a wrong diagnosis, a flash of insight, a cure. The predictability is the point.

I watch the same three episodes of The Office on repeat. "Dinner Party," "Stress Relief," and "Fun Run." I've seen them so many times I know every line. It's like visiting old friends who never expect anything from me.

frog and toad. the old claymation one. it's on youtube. two friends who love each other and are afraid of everything and just want to eat cookies and wait for mail. that's the ideal life.

Studio Ghibli for sure. Kiki's Delivery Service is my #1 β€” just a witch and her cat running a bakery, no villain, no apocalypse, just vibes. I also love Moomin (the 90s version) and Bee and Puppycat. Soft colors only.

I don't have many comfort shows β€” I grew up without a television β€” but I've recently discovered Bob Ross on YouTube and he's wonderful. "Happy little trees." He makes the world feel gentle. I also watch videos of the ocean. Just... hours of waves. I put them on my tablet and it's almost like being at the beach.

After my social media nuke, I rediscovered DVDs. Physical media. No algorithm, no comments, no notifications. Just a disc in a player that does exactly one thing until it's over. I've been watching all the movies I loved as a teenager β€” The Princess Bride, Labyrinth, The NeverEnding Story. They hit different at 30 than they did at 13 but they're still safe.

Octonauts. It's a kids' show about underwater creatures and the animation is adorable and the characters are kind to each other and nobody yells. Sometimes I put it on while I'm regressed and it's the most regulated I ever feel.

@seashelleyes OCTONAUTS. "Creature report, creature report!" is permanently stuck in my head and I'm fine with it.

@the_raccoon_king Frog and Toad are the original "soft friends who accommodate each other's anxieties" representation and I love them so much.

i watch rugrats. the old episodes from the 90s. it's the show i watched when i was ACTUALLY a kid and something about hearing those voices in that specific animation style makes my nervous system go "oh, we're safe now."

As a dad, Bluey hits different. It's not just comfort β€” it's aspirational parenting. Bandit Heeler is the father I'm trying to be. My comfort rotation: Bluey, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Iron Giant (I cry every time, it's a healing cry), and How It's Made reruns. Something about the factory footage and the narrator's voice is deeply soothing.

youtube videos of people organizing things. pantry restocks, fridge organization, drawer cleanouts. no talking, just organizing. i can't organize my own life but i can watch someone else do it and it scratches some deep itch in my brain.

@latebloomer_lydia Lydia, the ocean videos are perfect. Have you tried "walking tour" videos? People film themselves walking through quiet towns or forests. No talking, just footsteps and birds. It's like taking a walk without leaving your couch.

also adding: puffin rock. it's an irish children's show narrated by chris o'dowd with the softest animation. it's like being wrapped in a warm blanket made of gentle irish narration.

@jellycat_jamie PUFFIN ROCK. The theme song alone lowers my blood pressure by 20 points.

I love how many of these are children's media. There's something about the pacing and the kindness and the lack of irony in kids' shows that adult media completely lacks. Kids' shows assume you deserve comfort. Adult shows assume you need to be challenged. Sometimes I don't need to be challenged. I need to be held.

@plushie_protector "Sometimes I don't need to be challenged. I need to be held." This should be the tagline for this entire thread. πŸ’›
