The loneliness of car living β€” and how I cope with it

In my minivan setup thread I focused on the practical stuff. This one's about the part nobody talks about: the loneliness. I can go days without anyone making eye contact with me. When you live in a vehicle, you become invisible in a specific way. People walk past your 'home' without knowing someone's inside. You're surrounded by people but completely disconnected from them. How I cope: - Daily rituals. I make coffee on my camp stove every morning, even when I don't want it. The routine is grounding. - Public libraries. Not just for wifi β€” for existing near other people without having to interact. Parallel existence. - Voice memos instead of texting. Hearing my own voice out loud reminds me I'm still a person. - This forum. Honestly, the conversations here have been a lifeline on the hard nights. For anyone else living alone β€” car, van, apartment, wherever β€” how do you handle the isolation? What rituals keep you tethered?

I write letters to my niece every Sunday. With a fountain pen, on good paper. It takes me about an hour. She's nine and she writes back in crayon. Neither of us is doing it 'right' and that's exactly the point. The joy of making things β€” whether it's a letter or a LEGO set or a drawing β€” isn't in the quality of the output. It's in the act of showing up.

I live with other people but I'm still lonely β€” that's a different kind of isolation. Being surrounded by people who don't really see you. Your rituals point reminds me that I need to build more of those. The coffee one especially.

I lived alone for the first time after leaving my marriage and the silence was deafening. I started leaving the radio on low, just for the sound of another voice. Not even music β€” talk radio. It helped.

I'm 47 and I bought my first LEGO set in 35 years this month. It's a bookstore β€” two stories, a little townhouse attached, a tree that changes color for the seasons. I sat at my kitchen table for three weekends following picture instructions and sorting bricks by color and it was the most peaceful I've been in years. All of which is to say: joy doesn't have an age limit. Whatever little thing you're doing that brings you light β€” keep doing it. The world will tell you it's childish. The world is wrong.

i have a theory that fidget toys and hobby tools are cousins. the resistance of a good pop-it, the glide of a smooth pen, the click of knitting needles β€” they're all doing the same thing for different parts of the brain. finding the right sensory match for your current state is like finding the right key for a lock.

i live alone and love it but the loneliness still creeps in at weird times. like 3pm on a sunday. my ritual: walk to the corner store, buy one thing, say hi to the cashier. that tiny human interaction is enough sometimes.

200 square feet. Just me. The first month I talked to my plants. Genuinely. Not because I'm quirky β€” because I needed to hear a voice in the room and mine was the only one available. Now I do one phone call a week with a friend. Scheduled. Non-negotiable.
