The "I'm glad I found this place" thread

softskymarin [admin] β€” Feb 16, 2026, 07:34 AM
I've been thinking about how much this forum has meant to me over the past weeks. I found it when I was newly diagnosed, lonely, and convinced I was broken. Now I have a community of people who understand me without me having to explain myself. I have the raccoon king's metaphors and dino_nuggie_dad's dad wisdom and Lydia's beautiful reminders that it's never too late to find joy. I have Barnaby the dragon and Jeremiah the frog and all the comfort items and comfort meals and comfort movies. I have a place where I can say "I had a meltdown over a sock seam" and get "me too" instead of "what's wrong with you?" So this is just... a gratitude thread. If this community has meant something to you β€” whether you've posted a hundred times or you've just been reading quietly β€” drop a word. What brought you here? What keeps you here? What do you want to say to the others who are here with you? I'll go first: I'm glad I found this place. I was drowning and you all threw me a lifeline made of soft blankets and safe foods and unconditional acceptance. I didn't know community could feel like this. πŸ’›

i don't talk much in real life. words are hard. but here, i can type lowercase and use no punctuation and nobody judges me. i can just... be. that's a gift i didn't know i needed.

i found this forum by accident googling "grocery store overstimulation" at 2am after a meltdown. i didn't think anyone would understand. now i have 15 tabs of threads open and i feel like i've found my people. you're all weird in the same way i'm weird. that's everything.

I came for the information and stayed for the people. The research and the clinical knowledge are important to me β€” but the joy in this space is what keeps me here. The way people share their special interests with unguarded enthusiasm. The way comfort items have entire backstories. The way kindness is the default, not the exception. This is what community is supposed to feel like.

i've never met another adult who also collects jellycats and eats dino nuggets and cries in target when they rearrange the store. i thought i was the only one. this forum proved i wasn't. that alone was worth more than any therapy session.

I posted my first thread here two weeks ago, terrified, newly diagnosed, convinced everyone would tell me I was faking. Instead I got 17 replies of pure kindness. I've posted in almost every thread since. This forum became my support group, my education, my community. I don't know who I'd be right now without it.

I came here because I was tired of spaces that demanded I perform wellness. "Good vibes only." "Choose joy." "Just be positive." This is the first space I've found where people say "actually, things are hard, and I'm not okay, and that's allowed." The honesty here is more healing than any platitude.

i showed up to talk about raccoons and executive dysfunction. i stayed because SoftSkyMarin told me about immortal jellyfish and dino_nuggie_dad made me cry with a story about his daughter's seamless socks and Lydia went to the beach to find seashells at 67. this isn't a forum. it's a family made of people who were told they were too much and found out they were just enough.

i didn't know other adults meowed when they couldn't form words. i didn't know "safe foods" was a thing other people had. i didn't know stimming had a name. this forum gave me language for my entire life. i'll never be able to express how much that means.

Barnaby and I found our people here. I shared my comfort item and discovered an entire community of adults with stuffed animals and blanket collections and rocks in their pockets. I'm not embarrassed anymore. I'm proud. We're all soft here and it's the strongest thing I've ever been.

i thought i was the only person who couldn't open mail or make phone calls or fold laundry. turns out there's hundreds of us. maybe thousands. we're all just out here trying our best. that's incredibly comforting.

This forum helped me have the hardest conversation of my life β€” telling my boyfriend about my age regression β€” and it went better than I could have imagined because of the scripts and stories you all shared. Now he leaves me juice boxes and goldfish when I've had a hard day. This community directly improved my relationship. That's not hypothetical. That's real.

When I posted about my social media nuke, I was in the darkest place I'd been in years. The replies β€” the validation, the practical advice, the "you were chased off, not detoxed" reframe β€” pulled me back from something I don't want to name. This forum might have saved my life. I'm not being dramatic. I'm being honest.

I'm 67 years old and I thought I was done becoming. I thought the person I was at 50 or 60 was the final version. You all have shown me that we never stop unfolding. I'm coloring. I'm collecting seashells. I'm wearing colorful sneakers. I might be autistic β€” I don't know, and at my age I may never know for certain, but the framework fits and the community welcomes me anyway. That's enough. That's more than enough. 🌊🐒

I'm learning to say no because of this forum. I'm learning I don't have to earn my rest. I'm learning that "I don't have capacity" is a complete sentence. Every thread teaches me something I should have learned as a child. Better late than never.

@latebloomer_lydia Lydia. You are the heart of this forum. Every time you post, you remind us that joy doesn't expire and neither do we. Never stop unfolding. πŸ’›

I'm a 42-year-old dad with a stuffed frog and a dinosaur special interest and an autism diagnosis I got later than I should have. I came here feeling like I'd failed at being a "normal" adult. I'm leaving (well, staying) knowing that "normal" was a trap and "happy" is the goal. This community parented me in ways my parents couldn't. Thank you.

I'm reading through every response in this thread and I'm overcome. We built this. All of us. Out of nothing but honesty and kindness and the radical act of refusing to perform normalcy. I'm so proud of us. I'm so grateful for us. Jeremiah and I are raising a glass (of chocolate milk, obviously) to every single person here. πŸ₯›

"We're all soft here and it's the strongest thing I've ever been." @plushie_protector said that and it's the perfect closing thought. The world told us softness was weakness. We discovered it was survival. Thank you all for surviving with me. πŸ¦•πŸ’›πŸŒŠ
