Shoebox diorama update: the abandoned library is getting shelves!
Okay I mentioned this in my intro but I'm building a 1:24 scale abandoned library in a shoebox and I need to talk about it or I'll explode.
Progress so far:
- Walls are painted (mossy brick, lots of dry brushing)
- Floor is popsicle sticks stained with coffee (smells amazing)
- Built three bookshelves from balsa wood — they're crooked on purpose because abandoned libraries shouldn't have perfect shelves
- Made 40 tiny books from folded paper and leather scraps
- Current problem: the LED I want to use for the flickering lantern effect is too bright and I need to figure out resistors (math — my nemesis)
Has anyone else built a book nook or dollhouse room? I need resistor advice and also just want to see what other people have made. Show me your tiny worlds!

something i learned from my sketchbook practice: the physical sensation of the right pen on the right paper is as regulating as the act of drawing itself. i wonder if that applies to other things too — like, maybe the joy isn't just in the hobby, maybe it's also in the texture and weight and sound of the materials.
I haven't built a book nook but I NEED to see this when it's done. The coffee-stained popsicle sticks?? The crooked shelves on purpose?? This is exactly the kind of detail-oriented chaos I love. For the resistor: I had to learn this for an LED project and there's a calculator online that does it for you. You don't need to do math. Just plug in the numbers.
my sketchbook is full of repeating patterns. spirals, cross-hatching, concentric circles. i draw them when i'm overwhelmed and it's like my hand is saying 'shhh, shhh, shhh' to my brain. repetitive motion is underrated. it's not boring — it's grounding.
I don't do miniatures but I deeply appreciate the craft. Balsa wood, popsicle sticks, coffee staining — you're working with real materials and making something tangible. That's the good stuff. Post updates when you solve the LED problem.
@stims_and_sketches WAIT there's a resistor calculator that DOES IT FOR YOU?? I've been staring at ohm's law equations like I'm being punished. Thank you. @cast_iron_colby will definitely post updates — the library deserves to be seen.
I'm 47 and I bought my first LEGO set in 35 years this month. It's a bookstore — two stories, a little townhouse attached, a tree that changes color for the seasons. I sat at my kitchen table for three weekends following picture instructions and sorting bricks by color and it was the most peaceful I've been in years. All of which is to say: joy doesn't have an age limit. Whatever little thing you're doing that brings you light — keep doing it. The world will tell you it's childish. The world is wrong.
