The floor is lava: which room would you survive in?
You're at home. Someone just yelled "THE FLOOR IS LAVA." You have three seconds to get off the floor. Which room are you in, and what's your survival strategy? Rate your chances.
I'm in the living room. I've got the couch, the coffee table, and a strategically placed ottoman forming a three-point escape triangle. From there I can leap to the fireplace hearth, shimmy along the windowsill, and reach the kitchen where the countertops are my final fortress. Survival rating: 8/10. The windowsill-to-countertop gap is the dangerous part. I've practiced this.

There's something about working with your hands that reconnects you to being human in a way screens never can. I strip rust off old cast iron pans. My friend builds model trains. Another friend bakes sourdough. Different tools, same impulse β making something tangible in a world that increasingly wants everything to be digital and disposable.
My cast iron skillet is over a hundred years old. I found it rusted and forgotten at a flea market, brought it home, stripped it, seasoned it, and now it's the best pan I own. I think about that a lot when I see people discover hobbies later in life. The thing was always good. It just needed someone who knew how to restore it. Same with joy β it was always there, waiting to be uncovered.
i'm immediately dead. every room in my apartment has too much open floor space and not enough furniture. my survival strategy is acceptance and a dramatic death monologue.
My bedroom: bed β nightstand β dresser β bookshelf. Four solid anchor points in a clockwise rotation. I could live up here for DAYS. I keep snacks in my nightstand specifically for lava emergencies. I'm not joking. Okay I'm joking a little. But the snacks are there.
my bathroom is the safest room because the entire floor is covered in bath mats. i own an unreasonable number of bath mats. they're like little lava-proof islands. i can hop from mat to mat forever. the bath mats are my kingdom. 10/10 survival rating.
i'm in the kitchen which is a TERRIBLE choice because the counter's too far from the table and there's nothing in between. BUT i remembered i have a step stool. i can place the step stool strategically and extend my range. it's risky. it's bold. i give myself a 6/10.
my sketchbook is full of repeating patterns. spirals, cross-hatching, concentric circles. i draw them when i'm overwhelmed and it's like my hand is saying 'shhh, shhh, shhh' to my brain. repetitive motion is underrated. it's not boring β it's grounding.
