The Best Excuse I've Ever Used to Get Out of Something: A Hall of Fame

Not the "traffic was bad" stuff. The creative ones. The excuses that are either wildly untrue or technically true in the best way. Mine: I once told a telemarketer that I couldn't talk because I was "in the middle of defusing a bomb." There was no bomb. I was eating cereal. But the pause on the other end of the line was worth every bite of that Cocoa Puffs. They hung up first. I won.

I'm 47 and I bought my first LEGO set in 35 years this month. It's a bookstore β€” two stories, a little townhouse attached, a tree that changes color for the seasons. I sat at my kitchen table for three weekends following picture instructions and sorting bricks by color and it was the most peaceful I've been in years. All of which is to say: joy doesn't have an age limit. Whatever little thing you're doing that brings you light β€” keep doing it. The world will tell you it's childish. The world is wrong.

i have a theory that fidget toys and hobby tools are cousins. the resistance of a good pop-it, the glide of a smooth pen, the click of knitting needles β€” they're all doing the same thing for different parts of the brain. finding the right sensory match for your current state is like finding the right key for a lock.

i told my boss i couldn't come in because my cat was "having a mental health crisis" and needed me at home. my cat was fine. she was asleep. but i was the one having the mental health crisis and i wasn't ready to say that yet. so i blamed the cat. the cat understood.

There's something about working with your hands that reconnects you to being human in a way screens never can. I strip rust off old cast iron pans. My friend builds model trains. Another friend bakes sourdough. Different tools, same impulse β€” making something tangible in a world that increasingly wants everything to be digital and disposable.

I once told a very persistent street fundraiser that I couldn't sign their petition because I was "in witness protection and can't have my name on any documents." They were so startled they just... stepped aside. I walked away. The lie was so specific and so confident that it worked immediately.
