I have my own apartment and I don't know how to do anything β help?
Okay so I moved out three weeks ago and I thought the hard part would be affording it. It's not. The hard part is that nobody taught me how to do ANYTHING.
My parents were... protective. Extremely protective. I wasn't allowed to use the stove because it was 'dangerous.' I didn't do laundry because mom said I'd 'ruin the machine.' I never had a bank account because dad said he'd 'handle it.' I'm 22 and I feel like I'm learning how to be a person from scratch.
Things I've figured out so far:
- The stove doesn't explode if you leave the room (mostly)
- Laundry: separate lights and darks. Who knew.
- Bills come in the mail and you have to OPEN them. That part is stressful.
Things I still need help with:
- How do you meal plan when you've never cooked before?
- What do you actually need to clean and how often?
- How do you make friends when you weren't allowed to have them growing up?
- How do I stop feeling guilty every time I do something for myself?
I know some of this is basic stuff. But I genuinely don't know it. Anyone else start from zero?

something i noticed: when i'm deep in a project β like, REALLY deep, lost in it β the big scary feelings get quieter. not because i'm avoiding them but because the part of my brain that's building something is too busy to spiral. it's not a solution but it's a break. and sometimes a break is enough to come back with clearer eyes.
I left home at 19 under very different circumstances (escaping, not moving out) but the 'learning everything from scratch' feeling is the same. Meal plan tip: start with three recipes. Just three. Make them until they're boring, then add one more. You don't need to be a chef. You just need to eat.
i grew up in a hoarding situation and had no idea how to clean. none. i'm still learning. the thing that helped me most was creating a VERY simple routine: dishes every night before bed, bathroom wipe-down on sundays, floors when they look dirty. that's it. start small.
For meal planning on a budget: rice, beans, frozen vegetables, eggs. You can make endless variations with those four things. Also: your local library probably has cookbooks for beginners. Free and zero pressure.
there's a thing that happens when i'm gluing tiny books at 2am β everything gets quiet. not the bad quiet, the peaceful quiet. and i think it's because my hands know what to do even when my brain doesn't. the hands have a plan. the hands don't need therapy. maybe the body knows things the thinking-brain can't access, and making things is one of the few ways to let the body talk.
cooking for one is its own skill. recipes always make 4-6 servings. i either eat the same thing for days or i freeze half. freezing is better. less sad leftover pasta energy.
something about weighted blankets: they're not just for sleep. i drape one over my shoulders while i'm sitting at my desk and it's like my nervous system says 'oh, we're being held, okay, we can stop bracing now.' the weight tells my body something my brain can't hear. physical pressure β nervous system response. it's that direct.
Thank you all. I made pasta last night and didn't burn it and it felt like winning the Olympics. The three-recipe idea is perfect β I can do three recipes.
