What's your favorite "little" meal? (The one that feels like a hug)
crayoncryptid β Nov 21, 2025, 04:36 PM
Okay so I've noticed that when I'm regressed or just feeling small, I gravitate toward certain foods that feel... safe? Like, not just comfort food in the "mac and cheese is good" way, but meals that make my nervous system actually settle down.
For me it's: dino nuggets (specifically the ones from the purple bag), Annie's white cheddar mac and cheese, apple slices cut into thin wedges, and chocolate milk in a cup with a lid and straw. I'm 27 and this meal makes me feel more grounded than any meditation app ever has.
What's yours? I'm looking for ideas because my rotation is getting stale (literally, I've eaten so many dino nuggets).

I think there's something really psychologically interesting about "kid food" and nervous system regulation. A lot of us with trauma histories or neurodivergence have complicated relationships with food β sensory issues, control dynamics, food insecurity. Foods from childhood that feel "safe" bypass a lot of that baggage. They're predictable. They don't challenge us. They don't require decision-making.
For me: grilled cheese on white bread with tomato soup for dipping. It's the meal I made myself when I was 8 years old and my parents were fighting in the other room. It's still my go-to when I feel small and scared.

Oh I LOVE this thread. π§ My go-to little meal is:
- pb&j with the crusts cut off (yes I'm 36 and yes the crusts must go)
- goldfish crackers (flavor blasted cheddar, iykyk)
- apple juice in a sippy cup
- those little mandarin orange cups where the oranges are all soft and sweet
Something about food that's designed for kids just... hits different. No adult expectations. No "sophisticated palate." Just soft and sweet and familiar.

@plushie_protector "They're predictable. They don't challenge us." Yes!! I never thought about it that way but that's exactly it. When I'm overwhelmed, I can't handle a meal where I don't know exactly how every bite is going to taste and feel.

I didn't know other adults did this. I thought my "kid food" fixation was just another weird thing about me. I have a whole drawer in my kitchen that's just easy foods for bad brain days β apple sauce pouches, fruit cups, granola bars, those little cheese and cracker packs. I call it my "low-executive-function drawer" but honestly a lot of it is just... little food.

Mine is oatmeal with brown sugar and a little bit of milk, the way my grandma used to make it. I eat it out of a specific bowl β it's blue with little flowers on it, from my childhood home. The bowl is almost as important as the food.

I just discovered that they make reusable pouches you can fill with your own apple sauce or yogurt and I feel like I've unlocked a new level of adulthood. Portable smooth food that I can suck through a spout? Revolutionary.
raccoonking β Dec 2, 2025, 05:25 AM
@tentative_fern REUSABLE POUCHES. I didn't know these existed and now I need them immediately.
My little meal: fish sticks and tater tots. They go in the oven at the same temperature, they're done at the same time, zero cooking skill required. Dip everything in ketchup. This is a complete meal and I will not be taking questions.

I want to gently name something for anyone who feels shame about this: eating "kid food" doesn't make you less of an adult. You're feeding yourself. You're meeting your needs. You're regulating your nervous system. That's mature and responsible. The food itself is morally neutral. The judgment you're carrying about it probably came from someone who never had to figure out how to self-soothe with a dysregulated nervous system and limited executive function.

I appreciate this thread so much. There's something quietly radical about adults publicly saying "I eat dino nuggets and I'm not ashamed." Every time someone says it out loud, it makes it a little easier for the next person to stop hiding their Uncruatable habit. Community-building through chicken dinosaurs. π¦

Dino nuggets are the apex comfort food and I will fight anyone who disagrees. My kids eat them and I eat them and we are all thriving on the same dinosaur-shaped chicken ecosystem.
That said, my "little" meal rotation also includes:
- Pancakes shaped like whatever cookie cutter I grab first (stars, hearts, dinosaurs again)
- "Snack plate" β cheese cubes, crackers, grapes, carrot sticks arranged in little piles
- Cereal. Just... cereal. At any time of day. Froot Loops taste like Saturday morning cartoons in 1992.

@overstimulated_owl "Low-executive-function drawer" is GENIUS and I'm stealing that label. Mine is just "the snack drawer" but your name is better.
