We talk a lot about the hurtful, dismissive, ignorant things people say. Let's flip it. What's the kindest, most understanding thing someone has said to you about being neurodivergent β whether you're autistic, ADHD, self-diagnosed, or just finding your way?
I'll start: my wife, when I was deep in burnout and couldn't do anything "productive" for weeks, said: "You don't have to earn your existence. Resting is enough. You're enough." I cried for an hour. I still think about it every day.
What's yours?

"You don't have to earn your existence." plushie_protector, your wife is a poet and a healer. π
Mine: after my diagnosis, my best friend said "I've always known you were different. I just didn't have the word for it. And I've loved you the whole time. The word doesn't change anything." No "you don't seem autistic." No "but you're so normal." Just... I've always seen you and I've always loved you. Simple. Perfect.

my roommate once said "you're not hard to live with. the world is hard to live IN. you're just responding to that." i think about it constantly.

my partner, after i explained that i can't always talk when i'm overwhelmed: "okay. we don't have to talk. we can just exist in the same room. that counts as being together." he meant it. now we have whole evenings where we just... exist in the same room. it's the best.

My friend, when I was spiraling about whether my diagnosis was real: "You've been telling me how hard things are for you for years. You just didn't have the right words. Now you have the words. That's all that changed. The hard things were always real."

A professor in graduate school, after I disclosed my autism and asked for an accommodation on a presentation format, said: "Thank you for telling me. I want you to succeed in this program, and I can't help you succeed if I don't know what you need. What else would make this work better for you?" No pity. No "wow you're so brave." Just practical, respectful partnership. I still think about her.

my grandma, before she passed, said "you've always been my favorite weirdo." she didn't know i was autistic. she didn't need the word. she just loved the person i was. that's the goal, i think.

@the_raccoon_king "My favorite weirdo" β that's what love looks like. No sanitizing, no "you're not weird," just "you're weird and you're my favorite." That's everything.

my mom, a few years ago: "i'm sorry i didn't know about the sensory stuff when you were little. if i'd known, i would have done things differently." it was 20 years too late but it still healed something.

my partner, the first time i meowed instead of using words during overwhelm: he didn't flinch. didn't laugh. didn't ask "what's wrong with you." he just meowed back. we had a whole conversation in meows. and at the end he brought me a glass of water. i knew he was the one in that moment.

My boyfriend, the one I posted about earlier, recently said: "I don't need to understand it to respect it. You know what you need better than I do. Just tell me and I'll do it." The humility. The trust. The lack of ego. I didn't know men like this existed.

My granddaughter, love of my life, when I told her I thought I might be autistic at 67: "Nana, that makes so much sense. That's why you understand me better than anyone." A 14-year-old gave me permission to see myself differently. The young can be very wise. π

A stranger in this forum, actually. Someone replied to my first post β the one about deleting my social media β and said "you didn't do a digital detox. you were chased off. that's different." Having a stranger name what happened to me, validate it, refuse to let me minimize it... that was kinder than anything anyone in my life had said.

My daughter. She's 8 and she was diagnosed autistic last year. When I told her I was autistic too, she said "so that's where I got it from!" and high-fived me. No fear. No sadness. Just "oh cool, we match." That's the only reaction to a diagnosis that should exist.
