Moving to a new handle — how do I do it without being tracked by scrapers?
I need to start over with a new username. My old one is burned — it's on harassment forums, it's linked to my real name, it's not safe anymore. But I also know that scrapers and trolls track people across platforms. If I create a new account and use the same email, the same writing style, the same profile picture, the same interests — I'm basically wearing a name tag that says "it's me, I just changed my handle."
How do you actually do a clean migration? What details do you need to change so you're not immediately re-identified? Is it even possible to truly start over?

You're right to be worried about scrapers — most migration guides don't take this seriously enough. I've watched friends do clean breaks and the key is changing not just your username but your profile pic, avatar style, writing cadence, and posting times. The one everyone forgets: check if your old writing is quoted or screenshotted elsewhere. If someone has a folder of your posts, a new handle won't help until those references decay. Some people stagger migration over weeks — changing one platform at a time so the connection between old and new isn't obvious.
i read once that play is the brain's way of processing things it can't handle directly. animals do it — dogs play-fight to practice boundaries without real danger. kids play house to process family dynamics. adults... we forgot how to play. but i think my miniatures and dioramas are play. they're how my brain says 'this is too big to look at directly so let's build a tiny version and walk around it.'
Clean migration protocol:
- **New email.** Not a variation of your old one. A completely new email from a different provider. Gmail to ProtonMail, for example.
- **New username.** Nothing similar to your old one. Different theme entirely. If you were "cottagecore_flower," don't become "cottage_garden." Switch categories.
- **New profile picture.** Never reuse an image from your old accounts. Reverse image search exists. Use a new photo, illustration, or avatar.
- **Change your writing patterns.** This one's hard but important. If you always sign off with a specific emoji combo, drop it. If you have distinctive phrases or speech patterns, mix them up.
- **Stagger your platform migration.** Don't create all new accounts on the same day from the same IP address. Spread it out.
- **Don't immediately follow all your old mutuals.** This is the biggest tell. Rebuild your network slowly and selectively.
- **Use a VPN during setup.** Especially if you're concerned about IP-based tracking.
Is a 100% clean break possible? No. If someone is determined enough and has resources, they can eventually connect the dots. But you can make it HARD ENOUGH that casual scrapers and low-effort trolls won't bother. The goal isn't invisibility. It's friction. 🦝
don't use the same phone number for verification either. get a google voice number or something. phone numbers are the easiest cross-platform identifier and nobody thinks about them.
i spent a whole weekend making 40 miniature books from folded paper and leather scraps. FORTY. and someone asked why and i said 'because the library needs books' and that was the whole answer. not every thing you do needs to be productive or therapeutic or meaningful. sometimes making tiny things is just making tiny things. and that's allowed.
