The Task I've Been 'About to Do' Since Last Tuesday: An Accountability Thread
Not the big things. The small task that's been sitting on your mental to-do list like a tiny judgmental gargoyle. The thing you walk past every day and think "I should really..." and then don't.
Mine: There's a single pair of jeans draped over my desk chair. They're clean. They've been there for eleven days. All they need is to be folded or hung up. It would take 15 seconds. They're still there. They're part of the decor now. I've named them.

My cast iron skillet is over a hundred years old. I found it rusted and forgotten at a flea market, brought it home, stripped it, seasoned it, and now it's the best pan I own. I think about that a lot when I see people discover hobbies later in life. The thing was always good. It just needed someone who knew how to restore it. Same with joy β it was always there, waiting to be uncovered.
my sketchbook is full of repeating patterns. spirals, cross-hatching, concentric circles. i draw them when i'm overwhelmed and it's like my hand is saying 'shhh, shhh, shhh' to my brain. repetitive motion is underrated. it's not boring β it's grounding.
I'm 47 and I bought my first LEGO set in 35 years this month. It's a bookstore β two stories, a little townhouse attached, a tree that changes color for the seasons. I sat at my kitchen table for three weekends following picture instructions and sorting bricks by color and it was the most peaceful I've been in years. All of which is to say: joy doesn't have an age limit. Whatever little thing you're doing that brings you light β keep doing it. The world will tell you it's childish. The world is wrong.
there's a cardboard box in my hallway. it's empty. it's been empty for three weeks. all i have to do is break it down and put it in the recycling. it's now a permanent architectural feature. the cats love it. it's staying.
a single lightbulb burned out in my bathroom two weeks ago. i have replacement bulbs in the closet six feet away. i just... haven't. i shower in the dark now. it's vibey. i tell myself it's a choice.
i have a thank-you card already addressed and stamped on my desk. i wrote it three weeks ago. all i have to do is walk it to the mailbox which is LITERALLY outside my building. it's still there. the thank-you is getting less timely by the day. it's now a historical document.
